Martyn Haworth

Associate Director and Head of Training


Martyn has a unique balance of having been a hugely successful hands-on commercial operator, now with the additional skills and processes of an expert coach and trainer. Aged 23, he was managing a large out of town superstore for a FTSE 100 retailer, going on to become their youngest ever Regional Director, with responsibility for £180m sales budget and more than 600 employees.

In 2003, Martyn’s career hit the buffers when he suffered a serious illness resulting in several major surgeries. On reflection, he puts a lot of this down to ‘burning the candle at both ends’ and the ‘tunnel vision’ of chasing promotions, status and recognition. During his recovery time, Martyn decided to explore more about human psychology and started to research comprehensively into the fields of coaching and leadership. On return to work, Martyn’s career progressed into Group roles including leading a team that delivered significant cultural change, and where he coached the Board and other senior managers. Martyn was then appointed to the Stores Executive Management Team.

In 2008 Martyn left corporate life to set up his own coaching business, working with leading change management consultancies and directly for major corporate clients, and invested heavily in his own development and training. Although self-employment was very much a ‘lifestyle’ choice, Martyn also decided that his purpose was to now help Managers to become great leaders and coaches, and equip them with the skills and self-awareness to help them avoid going down the same path that he did. Now in his mid 40’s, Martyn is a true role model of a healthy work/life balance.

Martyn has been an Associate Director for CEQ since 2013. His recent work has included consulting for companies including Google, Twitter and Travis Perkins, delivering Coaching Excellence training programmes and working with senior teams on developing their vision and strategy. His other areas of expertise include facilitation, leadership development and change management.
